Edelman completed its research project on U.S. media coverage of Japan by delivering a strategic analysis of research data to identify "best practices" in media relations. Activities included, Developed outreach strategies to influential reporters at The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times whoe have shown favorability to Japan. Formulated strategic media relations tactics to help the Ministry of Foreign Affairs convey its key messages to U.S. news reporters in creative ways, such as informal conversations with foreign correspondents and arranging third-party speaks to speak to reporters on the Ministry's behalf, conducted an intensive media training workshop for Ambassador Ichiro Fujisak, developed a specific training model for Mr. Fujisaki highlighting key issues in Japan's international relations, and incorporating the Ambassador's advanced experience in diplomacy and conducting media interviews. Supported the training with on-camera digital taping and review of techniques following each practice interview. Reviewed communications initiatives at the Consulate General of Japan in New York. Topics included: Potential topics for media training with Ambassador Fujisaki. A potential opinion editorial (op-ed) about the Sea of Japan issue, including how to frame such an op-ed as an argument in favor of abandoning old debates and embracing a productive dialogue that focuses on the future of Asia. Discussed U.S.-based media strategy with Mr. Hideo Fukushima, Counsellor, Director of Public Affairs, Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC, and Mr. Misumi. Edelman shared its perspectives on the U.S. presidential election and likely evolutions in U.S. foreign policy during the next presidential administration. |
